iPhone Settings That Siri Can Change

While we all know that Siri still can't deal with unusual requests, there are standard things that a lot of us use it for such as making calls, setting reminders and the like.

But, Siri can also open the Settings app or open a specific part of the app such as open Notifications. You can also ask Siri if Wi-Fi is enabled. Here are 10 other settings that Siri can change:
  • Activate/Deactivate Wi-Fi
  • Turn on/Off Bluetooth
  • Increase/Decrease Brightness
  • Turn on/Off Night Shift
  • Turn on/Off Airplane Mode
  • Turn on/Off Cellular Data
  • Activate/Deactivate Low Power Mode
  • Enable/Disable VoiceOver
  • Enable/Disable Invert colors
  • Turn on/Off Do Not Disturb

Pioneer Release WEDJ App For iPhone

Pioneer DJ has released its WeDJ app for iPhone, an optimised version for the iPhone of their recently launched DJing app for iPad.

WeDJ for iPhone has all the same features as the iPad version of the app. The display offers up all the information and controls DJs need. Cleverly, the colours of the graphics and jog wheels change to match the colours of album cover images to help keep track of what’s on each deck.

For those just exploring the art of DJing the Sync button will help get your tracks perfectly in time for best results and one of the features will automatically set the volume to the right level, leaving you free to use the app’s other features including Hot Cues, loops, Pad FX and Combo FX to make your mix unique.

Cheapest 4K Blu-ray Disc Player

While streaming services like Amazon and Netflix and now Sky Q are providing 4K content, UHD Blu-ray discs are starting to become available.

If you don't have any of these services yet, UHD Blu-ray could be a good compromise. One, if not the cheapest, 4K Blu-ray players around is the Samsung UBD-K8500.

Reviews say that it has impressive 4K image quality and has two HDMI outputs so it has AV receiver compatibility. Although the build quality is not as good perhaps as some more expensive players. That said, it's available from Amazon for £246.00 with free delivery so great value for money, see the link on this page to buy.

Live HDR Broadcasting Could Be Just Around The Corner

Having previously posted about getting my 4K UHD TV set up, as with all technology, things move quickly with the next step up already on the horizon.

HDR promises better colour, brightness and contrast and would have framerates above 50 or 60Hz. I understand that some content is already available on YouTube and I would have thought that the major players in streaming services are also looking very hard in to this. A new standard has been produced which should standardise the requirements.

Although the publication of this standard is a big step forward, hardware manufacturers will need to integrate the technology into their receivers and broadcasting companies will have to actually start broadcasting. However, according to DVB who produced the standard, this could happen as early as next year.

Looks like I'll soon be behind the times again.

Game Capture Kit

If your looking to get some game capture tech either for yourself or as a present for a budding Youtuber then the AVerMedia - GL310 LGP Lite is looks to be great value for money.

It can carry out HD Game Capture up to 1080p 60Mbps and works on XBOX 360, XBOX ONE, PS4 and PC. It captures HD footage via HDMI at up to 60Mbps recording bitrate according to the manufacturer.

To purchase this bit of kit, see the link on this page.

iOS 10 Photo App

There's lots of little hidden things within iOS10 that have either been there since it was released or sneakily added in to updates.

One really useful one is that the new Photo's app lets you search images by what they show. You can search your photos for "car" or "dog", you can enter whatever you like. You can’t type anything you want, you have to choose a noun from one of Apple’s usual categories, but you can combine a noun search with, a place search for example, making it much easier to find a certain photo.

A really useful little trick.

See the link to a great deal on the new iPhone 7 on our page.

4K HDMI Cables

Just a note following the earlier post, you need to make sure that you use 4K compatible HDMI cables when connecting any UHD kit. The ones I used were great value made by CSL and supplied by Amazon, links to the items are on this post.

I needed a 1m cable, on the left and a 3m one, pictured on the right. Both with gold connectors, picture and sound quality is excellent just what you may expect from more expensive leads.

Great Value 4K HDMI Splitter

As a techy, one of my hobbies is Home Cinema (I've spent far too much money on DVD's and BluRay discs over the years). I'll write more about my modest setup in some later posts, but as a start I recently upgraded to Sky Q. I'd had a 4K ready TV for some time but never had the benefit of a 4K feed until I upgraded.

Then I realised that as I also used an AV sender unit to watch the TV in an other room, this posed a problem as there was no SCART output on the new Sky box. With a little thought, problem solved using this 4K HDMI Splitter. It feeds two outputs at the same time so one could go straight to the TV, the other to an HDMI to Scart converter. This unit is good as it feeds the two outputs at the same time, not all splitters on the market do that.

A great unit for the price, you can find a link to it on this post.

As we can guess the public release for iOS 11 is likely to be September 2017 after announcement at the WWDC earlier in June.

It's far too early to know what iOS 11 is likely to include, but here are a few things rumoured to be potentially included:

A more natural sounding Siri (although I quite like my Australian female voice that I have set)

A proper Dark Mode with a black background

Smart Wi-Fi which would automatically log on to the strongest known network and then switch the Wi-Fi off when not connected - would be great to improve battery life!

A customisable control centre so that you can easily toggle things that are best for you.

It's likely that the iPad 4, the iPad Mini 2 and the iPhone 5 will not be compatible with iOS 11, but again nothing's certain.

Obviously there are loads of rumours floating around and I'm sure some more will surface but I guess we're not going to know for sure until it's unveiled next year. I just hope we don't get the same problem as a lot of users did in updating to iOS 10 this year (me included!)

Monday 21 November 2016

Following reports that Apple will be releasing 3 new iPhone models next year, there are now some reports that they may not all have the biggest new feature publicised so far, OLED displays.

From articles that I have seen recently, due to limitations in the availability of the displays, which is likely to run in to 2018, only one of the new models are likely to have an OLED display. That said, there is still time for things to change so I'm sure we'll get more news around this.

As our mobile devices get used more and more while we are out and about these days it becomes more important to keep them charged, especially if you are away from home a lot. A piece of kit that has caught my eye is the Belkin Valet Charger.

The reason I like it compared to other charging banks on the market is that it has a built in Apple Watch charger so that you can charge both your phone and watch at the same time without needing to carry a separate Apple Watch charging cable. When fully charged it can charge your watch up to 8 times and your phone up to 3 times according to the manufacturer.

It's available now for £89.99 from the manufacturer.

Whilst we are waiting for Apple to decide whether or not they are going to include a camera in the Apple Watch, a tech startup company called Glide have come up with this:

It's a watch strap with two built in Sony cameras, a 2 megapixel selfie camera and an 8 megapixel front camera. It has it's own 8GB of memory but can also connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth or sync to the iCould via wifi.

It's expected to be available in Spring 2017, so a bit of kit to look out for.

Sunday 20 November 2016

As a self confessed Apple geek, you would have thought that my first post would be Apple related, right? Well sort of.

Whilst trawling through some of the latest tech out there I came across this:

Its a MicroSD card reader that you can use with iPhone and Android mobiles and also has a USB Type-C connector so it can be used with the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro.

If like me, you still have a 16Gig iPhone, saving photo's onto a piece of kit like this seems like a good move. There are other storage devices that you can slot in to the iPhone's lightning port such as an iLeaf so there are other options, but for anyone struggling for storage space, worth investigating.
